My Space

I see some of you guys are now my “friends” on myspace.com. Nice one. I have no idea what this site really does but it is a very entertaining waste of time! For those of you who are on myspace, what is your impression of it and how do you interface with it?

haha. myspace!! it’s actually helped my band a lot a lot. i know you don’t need any help getting your music out to people (considering it is incredibly well-known all over the place!) but it’s really good exposure for local bands.

check my band out! hahah we are silly silly!

For me, myspace is an “everything in one” site. dating, friends, music, events, a lot. and since it’s free everyone is on it!

I have to admit, it’s taking away from my “real” social life.

I personally think myspace is very addicting. Initially I joined because of friends who were using it but after awhile of surfing around I got into it. There is a lot myspace has that a lot of websites like it don’t and they are always updating it. I find it to be a really great way to meet people and find out about up and coming bands as well as established artists. A lot of people use it to network with people in certain professional fields. It also works like classmates.com does but more user friendly. Overall it’s a really good place and I’m glad you decided to hop on the bandwagon. I also hope it helps expose your music to more people.

Heh, I added you like an hour before you posted this. I’m not a new user but I didn’t really start it until recently so I might as well be. So far it’s been a great place to find new bands and people that share my interests as well as gigs for local bands I like. I just enjoy going there when I need to kill time online, though I don’t think i’ve checked out most of the feature yet. Hope you have fun with it :0)

  4. Topaz Says:

I’m new to it as well so I’m still a little puzzled by the whole thing myself. And I’ve also been spending WAY too much time there. It’s a bit cheesy. The whole “be my friend” thing is a little weird… I’ve listened to quiet a few bands that I’d never heard of. That’s been cool. I spent some time checking out all the groups…wow there are a gazillion of them! I guess you could say I’ve “met” some new people who seem nice…I don’t know. I’ve seen some funny funny pictures of people I don’t know…It’s just something else for me to do but I think it’s a great place for musicians to get themselves out there and also to meet other musicians. ??? Or if you’re lookin’ for loooooove…lots of that going on too.

  5. THL Says:

    Duncan,

MySpace is a free service that uses the Web for online communication through an interactive network of photos, blogs, user profiles, email, and other communication tools.

As you’ve noticed, at the moment it’s pretty much a social networking interface. Someday (probably soon), Marketers will wake up and realize it’s potentially a great place to spot trends and spread ideas. Just a hunch, but you heard it here first ;-)

I have to say once I turned 30 I gave up that stuff… in favor of good ol’ community volunteerism! I didn’t want to be a 31-year old craigslist-using-Playstation2-playing shut-in!

  7. MFitz Says:

All I say, Duncan, is that you’ll be addicted, beware! :)

Myspace gets into your blood. It is so evil, yet redic and harmless at the same time. Plus, it offers a nice place for me to goof off at during work which is a very good thing. And yes, people mock the ’space but deep down inside, they’re all fond of this wonderful site. Don’t let them fool you. Jerks.

I’ve been on it for over a year and use it just as much as when i first started (ie: every single stupid day.) If you’re friends are on it (as almost everyone of mine are!), it’s a riot to post messages, upload funny images and have a forum to be all levels of insane via the internerd. It’s beyond great. Fun times will be had by you, sir. I’m pretty sure of it.

Well, I’m stoked to see that you’ve joined. I’m gonna go add ya now!

Oh, and thanks for this blog thing you got going on. This MySpace biz got me to join today but I’ve been reading it since you started. It’s been awesome of you to keep us up on all things DS. I’m lovin’ it. Thanks!

    Enjoy your weekend!

    Hey Duncan -

Just checked back into your site after being away for awhile — so cool you are posting in here — says quite a lot about you. Thanks for doing this, and sharing your talent, which is amazing. I’m a musician too (in a different genre of music than you) — and am eagerly awaiting your next project.

    Thanks! take care guy -
    -Steve

PS. Haven’t checked out myspace yet, but from the comments made, it seems to be totally addicting… so I need to beware!

  9. Jennifer Lynn Says:

We have something similar to myspace called louisville mojo that just caters to the Louisville and surrounding areas in Kentucky. A lot of my friends are equally addicted to this site as a way to meet and talk to new people. I am personally not a part of this site or myspace for fear that I would never socialize in a traditional sense again.

  10. the_optimist Says:

dude… I just signed up for a myspace. Now it’s xanga, myspace, facebook (facebook is internet crack, man). whew… where do I begin with this thing?

  11. mangoclover Says:

I’d have to agree, myspace can be quite addictive, but I have cut back the amount of time I’m on it. For the longest time I had a picture of you and me at one of your concerts as my profile pic. :)

  12. Little Hands Says:

I like my space. Hey duncan I emailed you on there.

    Zack

  13. Nic Says:

hey, maybe someone on here can help me out. I noticed on his.. er, your.. (who do I address this to?) myspace, the song “lost on the moon” is up. where is that from? I thought I was up to date on all ds songs. I love it, where can I get it?! I’m so behind!

  14. tim Says:

Myspace is a pretty amazing resource. What I like most about it is that people from all over the country will hear your music and sign up as friends without solicitation. The myspace interface allows you to email people within a certain radius of any zip code. When you’ve got a show coming up in Seattle, just email everybody within driving distance. Since I uploaded 4 songs from my upcoming debut album….8000+ people have joined up on the friends list. Thanks to myspace, there is no way I’ll play to thin crowds ever again. It is pretty sweet to be able to contact only the people who want to be contacted. Efficient publicity is a rare and beautiful thing.

Hey Duncan, you want an addictive site? Try NationStates! http://www.nationstates.net

I spend way more time on that site than I should. My nation is Pharan.

  16. Tansy Says:

Oh Hesus. (You wouldn’t have said it right if I’d used the J.)
I feel this may become a confessional for many, really fast.

    Really, I’m addicted.
I like to pretend that it’s a place where I can meet intelligent people and get away with being ridiculously random.
Or maybe I just get off on be a narcissist?
    Heh.

    Really though, I love myspace…
Despite the fact that it’s virtual vortex.

So… Duncan, where the heapin’ hell are ya?
I’ve looked for you, and for some reason I’m unable to find you.
I realize my natural tendencies toward blonde-ism can create handicaps of everyday objects and situations, but I thought I understood the search engine’s um, searching techniques… Maybe not?

I’ll keep up the good fight.

    Over and out.

  17. Tansy Says:

    So.. guess what?
That blonde-ism didn’t account for music searching.
    I’m so ridiculous…

  18. keyboardplaya Says:

Yeah. I don’t really think it’s as good as it could be. It’s hard as hell to figure out how to get music/video stuff on my site, and as for music, I like purevolume.com better.

  19. yeepie0502 Says:

Holy Cow your on myspace??? I gotta go on and add you.
My space is insanely addicting. I think I signed up for it like a week ago and I just can’t not go on it. Lame huh? I don’t know it reminds me of high school when everyone leaves you notes, the hellos and your cool notes. Kinda funny…

  20. the reply Says:

myspace is a great way to get your band heard and to hear other bands you may never have been able to. it can really suck your life away though. can easily spend hours on that site.

  21. ingenue Says:

i’ve been on myspace for a while now and let me say that it’s DEFINITELY an excellent source for networking.

in fact, it’s difficult to AVOID people in some cases… lol.

it definitely IS an entertaining waste of time… but, you’ll find that there are a lot of bands/artists/labels/etc. on the site as well… tom (myspace.com founder) is really good at advertising shows, etc…. and because of its addictive qualities, you’re sure to find that many fans (new, old, and potential ones) will be checking out your profile OFTEN… to me it’s probably one of the best ways for people to keep up to date on the latest info on your music.

you can personalize it as well… but i’m sure that you knew that… if you need any help, hit me up sometime… i don’t mind. joe knows how to contact me. i personally made my page pretty simple and clean (i like it that way) but it’s due for an updated and cleaner look. ask joe about it if your interested. (sorry, i don’t like to advertise my personal profile) haha… :) otherwise, good luck! it’s easy enough to figure out anyway! ;)

  22. Miggy Says:

All I can say is if your not carefull with my space. You will forever be lost in a kind of space time continuim. It may seem like you have been on for half an hour but really you’ve wasted two days worth of life just writing people back and finding new people to swap meaningless letters to. Don’t Blog your life away. But yeah It’s great. Write me sometime. Ha ha ha.

  23. blackwuzzy Says:

    Dear Duncan,

I have looked at myspace.com briefly before, but never used it. I haven’t been to your space before or yet…but maybe I will decide to use it? Well, maybe. Anyway, reason why I’m writing is:

I’m listening to the soundtrack of “A Home At The End of The World” and I am reminded why I love you so much.

  24. ReddGrrrl Says:

oooh…i am late to this discussion as I’ve only just signed onto this forum.
MySpace is neat, but it’s also frustrating. I joined to keep in touch w/old friends, and it’s worked so well that I actually found one that I thought I’d lost forever! But there are some weird or creepy on there, too. Of course, there are ways around that. I’ve had to change my profile several times til men looking for internet *ahem* dates would go away. But now I have a small network of old & new friends, and some musicians that I like. I do not tend to blog there, as it seems too open a space. But for a musician such as yourself, I think it’s a great idea…indeed, I have searched for you on there (to see if you were there/get info on a new record).
Good luck in whatever you decided…and I soooo look forward to your next album. Every one of them is an absolute gift. Thank you for sharing your talents!

I can’t find you on Myspace. I want to add you!

  26. blue_psyche Says:

is that the same as friendster?

  27. musicchild84 Says:

but oh where is duncan on the space i’ve searched high and low and came up with nothing? would someone be so kind to share his id on there or would you be so kind to let me know duncan yourself? :)
    cheers!

  28. :) Says:

Myspace is definitely workplace entertainment for those of us that have to sit at a computer for 8+ hours a day. Myspace is basically a place where a bunch of internet hos post scantily clad nudes, where people arrange e-rendesvous for nights of internet debauchery, where freakish dudes try to pick up girls and get e-shot down, and well…to sum up, it’s an internet meat market. Almost sort of like Fresh Direct, but for sex with strangers. That said, I found my boyfriend on Myspace. Amazing, eh?

  29. blackwuzzy Says:

You have to join just to get into that place?

Humm. Sounds like alot of work!!

  30. jenvargas Says:

Firstly, I just have to say, I can get used to this communicative Duncan! Don’t be afraid of us! We like you.

Secondly, I’ve been on myspace.com for awhile and I like it okay. While it’s a pretty valuable marketing and networking tool, I can’t say that it’s all that addicting (to me). I think MySpace is more of the MTV2 of said sites. Sites like www.friendster.com (Fuse) and http://hi5.com (TRL) are similar in structure but MySpace is the better of the three. I’m on LiveJournal more than I am MySpace to be honest. The all-in-one convenience thing is great but I’m more about bare bones, I guess?

Also a word about Lost On The Moon: Beautiful. Pedal steel *and* orchestrated strings?? More reasons for me to adore you! Will you ever do wrong? I think not. Michael Nesmith would be proud. And I’m not kidding! (I ♥ Nez.) I only wish string sections were easier to coordinate live. Is it a Daylight B-Side?

Apologies if I am behind. I’m a LONG time fan (96) who just realized the site has been updated! ::smites own hand:: BAD fan!

  31. katleya Says:

Is anybody here in FRIENDSTER? That’s also like MySpace. Most of my friends have a My Space and Friendster account but I’d rather stay in Friendster…since it’s a hassle to have two accounts. hehe. =)

  32. blackwuzzy Says:

I never bothered to join that thing…Maybe someday I will.
    love,

    M XO BW :)
