Black Books
There is a TV show on BBC America called Black Books. It’s on Thursdays at 9:30 (tonight!) and it is literally the most hilarious TV show I have ever seen. I’m such an anglophile I guess, but I think you guys will like it.

Another Anglophile…fantastic! I just came back from England and watched a few of Series One episodes(was introduced to the show via a good friend). The show is very wicked and maddening! Good to know that my favorite musician fancies British sensibilities…okay you must be into art, history, culture…as well, right? BRAVO, BRAVO, BRAVO. Oh, but thankfully/hopefully graced with excellent American sense of humor and easy-going traits. :-)
Keep Posting…
Cheers,
Leveriza

Hi,
Me again.
Actually, it seems the show is off the air for the moment. DDDIIISSSAAASSSTTTEEERRR!!!
I should have checked before I posted. Anyway, I assume there will be a DVD of the whole season soon. Then we can all get our fix of the fine entertainment that is Black Books.

I’ve never heard of it, but I get the channel. I watched the clips of the show that Tim posted, and laughed my ass off…at 6:30 am!! That’s not an easy thing to do, funny stuff!!! :D Hoping for a dvd release too Duncan, so I can watch all of the episodes.

Hmm…Never saw it. Actually, never even heard of it. Had to laugh at your drama though Duncan. DDDIIISSSAAASSSTTTEEERRR!!! Hehe…Funny. I love it. By the way, you were up very late…what kind of crazy stuff is going on there on a Thursday night in NYC? :D
Laura(not an anglophile but sympathetic to those of you who are and will miss the show)

I have a serious addiction to the BBC. Drives my husband crazy. I even watch all of the DIY and antique shows. I love the Kumars.. also love Graham Norton. He is great. Also love Mystery Monday.. so many great shows, I could go on forever.

hey hey,
following on from Black Books, i was wondering if anyone had caught any of The Office yet, in it’s US incarnation. Living in the UK, i’ve only heard bits on the radio but i’d be interested to see exactly how different the UK and US versions are. What i heard on the radio seemed a lot slicker and more polished but i guess you’d expect that transfering it over.
If you can, check out the English one too. if you’re a Black Books fan, i’m pretty confident that you’ll get The Office in its original form. And Duncan, ‘Freelove Freeway’ would be a great cover! The Series is worth buying for the original tracks.
cheers, ben.

So you say you’re an anglophile….
It’s cool. I’m a Gaelica…phile. ???
Is that a word?
Whatever. I like the Irish. Good people.
I used to watch a lot of British shows when I didn’t have cable, and my PBS station was my only source for good culture.
I miss “Keepin Up Appearances…” :sigh:
April 3rd, 2005 at 4:45 am
You MISS keeping up appearances?! i thought we’d maybe shipped it over to you to get rid of it in the hope that it would fade slowly in to obscurity! you’re not supposed to enjoy it!
ben.
ps. i’m pretty sure it was directed at DS but i’m no anglophile, i’m just english. forgive me, someone has to be.

Ben - you are not the only one :) This is my first post - so hello everyone.
BBC 3 is showing some great UK comedy. After a few years of going nowhere, UK comedy is finally picking up pace again. If you like Black Books I would also recommend…
The Smoking Room
Little Britain
Ideal
Phoenix Nights (and the excellent spin off - Max and Paddy’s Road to Nowhere) (not BBC but still rather good)
I don’t know if they have or will show on American TV, but keep an eye out for them.
I often wnder how the British sense of humour translates over the pond? I suppose because we are so similar in many ways the differences are more apparent. Oh well, vive la diff?rence.
April 3rd, 2005 at 4:50 pm
The humor (sorry, I know we spell it wrong) does translate.
Not in mass numbers, but eh. Americans aren’t so quick with the wit.
Really though, I love stuff like Trigger Happy TV (before they added the US cast). That sort of stuff makes me laugh until tears or farts.
Was that too much info?
Anyway, I’m off to go eat some pop-tarts and sigh heavily at myself for using “used” incorrectly in my last post.
Oh well, I was tired. What can I do?
Much love,
Tansy
Ps. “Keeping Up Apperances” makes me giggle.
And at the time, I was scrapping for something more intelligent than “Rachel’s bangin’ Ross? AGAIN!?!”
So, my tongue totally sticks out your way Benjsutt. ;D

I wish I had international channels. I did, however, see the video clips online. Hilarious stuff! Tansy, I LOVE Trigger Happy TV. I especially love the “preacher” bits that Jerry Minor does outside of portajohns.

I’m a Brit too and Black Books is one of my favourite shows. You should check out Dylan Moran and Bill Bailey’s live DVDs. Bill’s songs are excellent and Dylan has been one of my favourite stand-ups for years.

Dylan Moran rocks. I’m more of a Stephen Fry girl myself.. You should also check out The Kumars at 42. They’re CRAZY and I LOVE it!
