The Dears
I saw a video of one song by The Dears (am I spelling the band name right?). I thought it was a great song and a pretty cool video.
Has anyone heard of this band and/or have any thoughts about them?

Hey Duncan! So ready to hear some new stuff…although I’m sure you’re just as anxious to finish. Memphis sure would love a visit!

Hey Peter! Good to see you again…If you mean the band out of Toronto,
then yes you spelled it right. They’re kinda radiohead, kinda Morrisey.
I saw them awhile back, and really like alot of their music….Lost in the
plot, is one song i like.
Theres my 2 cents

Actually it was me, Duncan, but somehow I was on Peter’s login.
Peter gets all his good taste from me anyway though(kidding!).

Hey Duncan, I looked up The Dears site.. looks pretty cool. The Bio is a cool read. They aren’t coming to Phoenix so I guess I will have to wait to see them til next time around. We don’t get a lot of small tours here. I saw you here in 97 when you toured with Shawn Colvin. We left the show after your set (we love Shawn but only went to see you) and you were sitting outside of your bus. We went up and spoke to you and you were so kind and gracious that I have never forgotten it and will be a lifelong fan. Also you gave me a real hug and I thought that was lovely. Hope to see you here again soon. Kate

Warm and Sunny Days *i think that’s the name* is a wonderful song. I listen to them on Myspace. It’s kind of electronic but jazzy. I love the vocals.
Hope to see you in Houston Duncan, we can get some coffee after a show (This is Wakechic from your old message board, by the way!)
Erika.

I just went to their site to check them out. I’ve heard that song “Lost in the Plot” on the radio and like it. They have a nice sound.

Yes, I have heard of The Dears. It’s a Canadian band. A friend in Montreal introduced me to them a few months ago. Their sound is rich: orchestral, guitar-textured. There’s some drama … and they can be a little dark in places … but I think this is a hopeful band ;-)
Some of their music reminds me of Smiths, and Morrissey sans Smiths. And yes, there’s some Radiohead influence.

Why yes, have to agree with Aly… the one song, “Lost in the Plot,” the beginning sounds very much like Morissey…a very hopeful ban indeed!
Duncan, which song/video of the group have you seen/heard?
Also, if by any chance you are playing in San Francisco…do not forget to post it…thanks very much. :-)
Cheers,

Kate_s13, I too live in Phoenix, which is a VERY unfortunate place to be if you’re into good music! Lucky for me, I am originally from New England and was able to see Duncan play at a very cozy venue in Providence about 10 years ago. I miss those types of shows!!

Hey JB, Nice to know someone else in Phoenix has good taste ;) I am envious of your cozy Duncan show. *sighs*

WEll Duncan, I guess its ok for you to pop your head in here as well!
Thanks for letting me know it was you I that shared a musical interest
with. Anyway, do let us know which song/video it was you saw. Its
always nice when we can turn other people on to what otherwise might
be unknowns.
Peace,
Aly

Hello everyone! I’m very new here (first post..)… and uh… hm. I dunno. I’m a big fan though. I’m sure that’s obvious, but Daylight really inspired me and I’ve been trying to introduce it to my friends ever since. The good thing was that they all liked it very much. Anyway, It got me through some rough times and was just what I needed. So, just saying hi. I’m sure I’ll be around from time to time.

I just looked them up…they’ve been around for a long time. I’ve never heard of them, which is odd since I’m so good about keeping up with what you crazy kids listen to these days. :)
I’m diggin’ it…thanks Duncan for the recommendation.

hi,
first timer for the posting/chatting/blogging thing. . . but since I’ve been seeing cool bands mentioned i wanted to chime in.
first heard alexi murdoch on kcrw here in l.a. and saw him perform at hotel cafe in hollywood where he’s had a residency or two. great and renee stahl was great as his back-up.
i missed the dears when they opened up for morrissey on halloween 2004, but i plan on catching their free show at amoeba music tomorrow. they’re performing with the soundtrack of our lives here in l.a. next week. they are briefly mentioned in an article about canadian bands in the latest issue of tracks.
hope to hear about more bands and performances (especially Duncan’s)!

what are the songs released by the dears? i may ask a favorite radio station of mine to play one of them if they can. the dears aren’t known here, and of course i don’t know them either. have to look them up in the net in the next few days

Oh Canada! The Dears are pretty cool. I get a Smiths VS Leonard Cohen vibe.. They’re very “Duncan,” if I may say so.
