Joanna Newsom
Do yourselves a favor and listen to her new record “YS”. Gorgeous, unique and an antidote to all the pointlessness of american tabloid culture and the hackneyed music that goes along with all of that.

I LIKE that you’re blogging again! That means, I can officially take a looooooooong vacation!!! :D
Oh yeah, Joanna Newsom’s new “ees” record…love the orchestra and that rambling(maybe a bit tortuous too) delivery of her lyrics…
Cheers!

Well, I’m having a hard time finding some clips of the new album to listen to at the moment, but I just checked out her video for her song “Sprout and the Bean” and she’s pretty darn good.
Nice folk, very unique, especially her voice. Her voice is very youthful and sort of kiddish sounding, but it works perfect with her sundries.
Thanks, Duncan.

I’m heading to the music store to pick this up today. I’ve been hearing lots of good things about it.

Wow! My cousin gave me that disk for Xmas and I’ve REALLY been enjoying it. Glad it’s on your radar too. I was actually thinking of putting her 2004 album on my birthday wish list…
And good to see you around here, Duncan…
Cheers,
Elizabeth

I went to my local library in Columbus, OH to check it out and I’m number 80 on the waiting list! Columbus has a good music scene so I’m sure it’s getting good “street cred”. I’ll probably just go buy it.

(glad you loved “the road,” too, Duncan.)
joanna newsom is definitely quirky. she, at moments, sounds like a little girl then an old woman.
music folks with newish or soon-to-released albums/eps that interest me(in case you were all wondering): the little ones, stoney, dan wilson, tobias froberg, page france, silversun pickups.
and don’t you love all the bands that rock the glock(enspiel)?!

“Ys”/”ees” .. i like it. it’s a welcome change from the obvious ..
very unique!
and one more thing — it’s really good to have you back from there …
no more disappearing houdini acts … :)

So I picked it up yesterday and gave it a listen. Honestly, I’m having a problem with her voice. I want to like it but I don’t know if I do. The music is gorgeous though. I’ll have to give it some more listens.

I’m already a huge fan.
You’ve been really on the ball with the good recommendations.

She sounds like the love child of Tori Amos (musically) and Bjork (vocally). Specifically, the music reminds me of Tori’s Mr. Zebra. I’m a big fan of Tori, so the I love the music, but I agree with Topaz: her voice does kind of grind like Bjork or Macy Gray. To be honest, I didn’t like The Smashing Pumpkins at first because of Corgan’s voice, but I got over that to enjoy the music. Perhaps if we just listen a little more…

I got a good laugh when the reviewer for Amazon.com said her voice is somewhere between Bjork’s and a hand brake.

Check out www.clareburson.com
She is an amazing singer songwriter as well. Would be a great show to see her open for Duncan.
