spring awakening: opening night live blog

The Spring Awakening Opening Night Live-Blog is after the jump, in reverse chronological order.

**scroll down to start from the beginning**

2:17—PS: we’re drinking wine at duncan’s and there’s a giant jar of green MandMs on the table which were, evidently, a gift from the Grey Gardens folks. the significance being that the green MandMs are the sex MandMs, and SA is all sexual about it… You guys probably got that without the explanation.

1:43—okay, we’re out of here. i thought this thing was gonna go until 6 in the morning, but i guess that’s not how these theater types roll. but everyone had a blast, and duncan got a million compliments on the show and about two million compliments on his bespoke Duncan Quinn suit. Thanks to everyone who checked in on the blog periodically. in all seriousness, Spring Awakening is an incredibly intense and emotional piece of theater. My bias notwithstanding, the score in unlike anything you’ve ever heard on broadway, and the cast is an extraordinarily talented group of professionals who show more poise and maturity than their ages might suggest. In my opinion, they deserve all the accolades that you’ll all see foisted upon them over the next few weeks and months as more and more theatergoers experience this moving production. Cheers, everyone.

1:25—there was just the drunkest kid in the history of alcohol in that room and five bouncers were trying to escort him out for half an hour. Only at tavern on the green do the bouncers spend half an hour nicely asking you to leave. Kid got lucky.

12:24—also, the christmas tree they have set up in this room is fake. we’re in central park but there’s a fake x-mas tree. Warrants mentioning.

12:22-a note on the location of this party: tavern on the green right now looks like christmas took a shit on easter. If you can imagine that. I’m just saying.

12:11—quick show note: at the end of the encores, leah michele (the lead girl) and steven sater were in the middle of the stage hugging after everyone else walked off. it was really spontaneous and beautiful. Just wanted to mention that because kacie just reminded me of it. I will now resume being sarcastic and drunk.

12:05—all the cast kids saw me sitting in the front row singing along with all the songs. That’s embarassing.

11:22—they only have chardonnay and if you know duncan you know that doesn’t bode well.

10:44—mary stewart masterson is sitting with us. Duncan is scoring the flick she directed called The Cake Eaters. She’s real cool-she just showed me how to do a time-step.

10:33—duane just brought me my first vodka. FYI. Oh, duane’s duncan’s best friend. He’s also Custom (www.teamcustom.com) our sister kacie is also sitting here, just so you guys know.

10:20—word is that the arts and leisure section of the new york times already features a rave review of the show so head over to nytimes.com and check it out. Still awaiting duncan’s arrival. I’m on (free) glass of wine number three. There are tons of celebrities here, but I don’t know who anyone is. I only care about regina spektor anyway. (Heart heart heart)

9:30pm—wow. Three ovations. The kids were awesome tonight. During the third ovation, they brought duncan, steven sater, bill t. Jones and michael mayer up on stage for bows. We’re on our way to tavern on the green for the afterparty.

8:20pm—it’s intermission. I’m totally sitting next to regina spektor and we just chatted a little. She’s so awesome. I was gonna try posting during the show but I’m sitting in the front row and already got in trouble for wearing this beer helmet. See you guys after act two.

Well, we already forgot a bunch of shit that I had to go back and get, so now they might start without me. The show must go on.

Welcome to the spring awakening opening night live blog. This is totally experimental, on the fly, and contingent upon my sobriety. So if I get drunk or bored, updates will probably cease. So keep your fingers crossed.

Great blogging… Anyone who can say that the “tavern on the green right now looks like christmas took a shit on easter,” is totally the Bee’s Knees!

I’m so pleased about the rave reviews and can’t wait to see the show on Broadway!

    Peace!

  17. Vanessa Says:

Peter, you are too adorable. hehe. The green m&m update tops it all off nicely!

  18. Sliver025 Says:

    The CD is great.

I’m so happy though i have to say that i think Mirror Blue night is better when duncan does it.

It was an awesome Christmas gift though.

Peter thanks for blog. It had gone stale.

  19. Tansy Says:

    Hey Peter,
    I totally understand about Gina.
She’s my homie… at least in my speakers.

Thanks for an interesting view of the night.
It’s kinda like my CTA journaling- scattered and quipped.
    But deeply involved.

Tell your brother that I’m hoping for a Chi-town tour date soon. And you seem kinda hip… Feel free to come out too. ;)

    Happy New Year Sheiks!
Be safe, and if you need any help eating those M&M’s say the word.
I’ll make like All 4 One and “I’ll be there.”

    Kisses and such,
    Susann

  20. tzarinna Says:

    Man, am I behind.
    Big props. Good read. :)

  21. sjbeatle Says:

I know I’m biased, but all I have to say is that Spring Awakening was probably the best theatre going experience I’ve had yet.

I saw the workshop at the Lincoln center years ago, and have really followed the show. I didn’t see it off Broadway, but finally got my chance at the Eugene O’Neil last Wednesday. They’ve come a long way, and the show is even better than I ever expected. I knew I’d love the music, but the play itself is very witty and sophisticated. And the performers are all amazing. There isn’t one sour grape in the mix. John Gallagher, who plays Moritz, is a shining light.

    Bravo, Bravo,
    Sad Steven

  22. jldorn1 Says:

Congratulations on Spring Awakening! It’s a beautiful score, and very well done.

And thanks Peter for updating the blog. The green m&ms thing was very funny.

I have a really small request… I just got the soundtrack to Spring Awakening and haven’t been able to see the show in person since I don’t live in NYC. The problem is that there is no way to tell who is singing what songs from the liner notes on the cd (which makes it much more difficult to follow the story if you haven’t seen it). I’m enjoying the music very much, but I really would like to know who’s singing what. Can someone post on this site which character is singing which songs? It would really help us poor out-of-towners who can’t get to the show.

    Thanks!
    Jennifer

  23. blackwuzzy Says:

Oh, it all sounds so funny now…looking back Peter.
What an Amazing 6 Month Accomplishment. It’s totally unbelieveable. Thanks for always sharing. (Of course I mean only 6 months on BW)

Come to think of it…Thise are my Initials !! Cooler Now…..

    BW :)
