Live Blogging the Tonys from the Tonys.

June 8th, 2007 by peter >

I wasn’t sure if it was spelled “Tonies” or “Tonys” just now, so I googled it, and the NY Times has it as “Tonys”, so that’s what I’m going with.?? It is, after all, the paper of record.

So, there’s a rumor on the new front page of this site?that The Antoinette Perry Awards for Excellence in Theatre will be live blogged on this here blog direct from Radio City and then from the official SA?after-party.? I can neither confirm nor deny, at this point, because the blackberry I was supposed to?borrow for blogging the thing got lost (not by me).? So right now, I’m not sure what’s happening.? Somebody who lives in NYC: please?bail me out and loan me a blackberry for the night so I can properly?record my?snarky and disparaging comments, instead of just thinking them.

So,?anyone who was going to read the thing, check in pre-festivities on Sunday.? I’ll post status updates so you’ll know if it’s happening.? Also, NO ONE say anything about what happens on the Sopranos.? I tried and tried to get them to move the Tonys to Monday night, but theater people feel about TV people the same way Rugby fans feel about Aussie Rules Football fans, so it was a nonstarter.? (I just recently learned??from our?Australian cousin?that Rugby people don’t like Aussie Rules Footie people.??I bet they’d put aside their differences for the Sopranos, though.? I’m just saying; it’s a good show.)

After the Tonys are over and done with, we’re going to decide what to do about this blog thing.? If you’ve seen the new front page, you’ve maybe noticed that the link to the blog is buried in “Archive”.? That’s because we’re not sure what we’re going to do about it.? Duncan just doesn’t have the time to post here with any regularity.? I’m trying to convince him to leave it up and I’ll just start posting more regularly, but that would probably devolve into me talking about things totally unrelated to DS, like southern hip-hop, mixed martial arts and the NBA.? You might not think Duncan, Lil’ Wayne, Renzo Gracie and Gilbert Arenas have anything in common.? They DO.?

Members Only We Hardly Knew Ye.

March 2nd, 2007 by peter >

With a heavy heart, we announce the dissolution of the DS.com Members Only area. Thanks to everyone who participated in this noble experiment, and rest assured, you?ll continue to have access to everything in there for the duration of your subscription.

As some of you feared, updates were few, and dutiful posting was more challenging than we thought it would be, thanks to Spring Awakening, and film scores, and rock bands, and producing, and other various projects, all of which Duncan tries to juggle at once.

Anyway, it?s all over now, but we?re working on incorporating an embedded music player into the site which should satisfy some of the multimedia void around here and also be very easily modified and updated. So that?s something.

Apple hearts Duncan and vice versa

February 2nd, 2007 by peter >

Oh, Apple. We Three Sheiks all heart you a real lot, especially now. Great Apple.com profile of Duncan and Spring Awakening as part of their Pro Profiles feature. Duncan sold me on Macs about seven years ago, after nearly a decade spent on Windoze, and I’ve never looked back. And these days Kacie is making music on Macs, too.

So, Bill Gates, I am not mad at you, dude, even though it appears you did get up on the wrong side of the Zune this morning, but Steve Jobs gets us the goods we need for make benefit glorious musicals of Broadway.

MTV

February 2nd, 2007 by peter >

You can go right HERE to check out the MTV piece on Spring Awakening. I was psyched to see John Norris still holding it down up at MTV News. You. Hear it. First. Now they just need to get “Yo! MTV Raps” back on. I want to hear what Ed Lover thinks of Spring Awakening. No, I am not kidding. Can someone get on this?

Martin Amis

January 26th, 2007 by duncan >

I’m in Palo Alto for the week working on The Nightingale with Steven. In a strange and fortuitous coincidence, Martin Amis gave a reading and Q and A last night just down the road from where I?m staying. His new book, House of Meetings is extraordinary in that it takes subject matter of such darkness and turns it into a certain kind of literary beauty that is totally unique. And his answers to the audience members’ questions (mine included) were as thorough as they were wonderfully tangential. Anyway, got my book signed, and even managed to awkwardly invite him to Spring Awakening. I hope he goes to see it …

Cheers,
DS

Do yourselves a favor and listen to her new record “YS”. Gorgeous, unique and an antidote to all the pointlessness of american tabloid culture and the hackneyed music that goes along with all of that.

“Children of Men”

January 7th, 2007 by duncan >

Go see this movie. I think Alfonso Cuaron is kind of a genius. I don’t want to go into great detail about the film but he has the great courage to suggest an idea that few people seem to acknowlege. Namely that, the way our modern world is heading, there is very little difference between the government forces (read: fascist) and the freedom fighters (read: terrorists). More importantly, he points out in a very powerful way that there are good guys and bad guys in both groups. It’s the human individual that matters (their spirit), not their so-called ideology!

Jumping off the soap box now!

La Dolce Musto

November 22nd, 2006 by peter >

In his 11/21 column, Michael Musto (Village Voice) talked to Duncan about SA. It’s towards the bottom of the page. I approve of Michael’s employment of the term “shtupping” [sic-it’s “schtupping”, no?]. Under-utilized, IMO, so it officially replaces “schmuck” as my go-to Yiddish slang.

SA opens December 10th. I’m considering live-blogging the after-party. Thoughts?

(Oh, yeah-sorry about comment moderation… damn spammers… we’re working on it.)

Some people’s kids…

November 2nd, 2006 by peter >

So, from here on in, comments will be approved before they are posted. We will do our best to approve them every day.

It’s a shame that a few have to ruin it for the many.

Peace/out.

Spring Awakening Update

October 9th, 2006 by duncan >

Today was the first day of rehearsals for our move uptown to the Eugene O’neil Theater. It went well but I’m tiirrreeeddd. And the cast recording is coming along nicely - hoping for an early December release to coincide with the opening of the show.

How about that Hugo Chavez?

September 23rd, 2006 by duncan >

I’m inclined to think he is a part of a (mostly) positive trend toward southern hemisphere autonomy, but I just bought a drum machine on e-bay from a Venezualan who is not happy about his leader at all. Thoughts?

I’m back …

August 29th, 2006 by duncan >

Hello all,

I’ve been in the blue ridge mountains in N. Carolina for the past few days recovering from fortune’s slings and arrows.

There’s little excuse for my lack of communication but here’s what I can tell you: I’ll be recording the Spring Awakening cast album throughout September and I hope to have it ready for release when the show opens in December (or before). As you may know the “Anthology” is coming out 8 weeks from now and Chris Garneau’s album “Music For Tourists” will be in Stores Jan. 23rd. So there will be no shortage of “product” this season. What else … I’m half way through “The Looming Tower” which is a very cogent and intelligent account of the rise of Al-Queda and Osama’s role in it from its inception. Because summer is almost over and it can’t all be beach reading all the time, folks.

Write me back.

Several Tours Dates moved…

August 8th, 2006 by peter >

[We’re repeating this here in case folks haven’t visited the news page of late.]

It has been announced that Spring Awakening will move to Broadway for an opening at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre this fall. Because the musical is being fast tracked to open, we will have to reschedule several shows in September. Those who have purchased tickets for the following shows will be fully reimbursed. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience but I hope you all understand the gravity of the opening. Vienna Teng will remain on the shows.
Please contact the ticket outlets or promoters for refunds.

Tue Sept 12 - Cleveland, OH - Beachland Ballroom
Wed Sept 13 - Ann Arbor, MI - The Ark
Thu Sept 14 - Ann Arbor, MI - The Ark

these days …

July 16th, 2006 by duncan >

I wish I were posting about something non music-related but I’ve been in recording mode the past couple of weeks so that’s all I have to talk about. Specifically, David Poe and I are closing in on finishing the rock band record and the first seven Spring Awakening songs from the forthcoming cast album are also coming along nicely.

That’s all for now - I hope to see many of you in the next couple of months at the shows …

Well it looks like there is a new place to go for everyone to talk s++t about me. Or whatever else. This is probably best since I’ve been so bad about blogging lately. Anyway, it’s very fancy-pants so please dress appropriately while on that site.

Cheers, DS

Keep sending those remixes!

June 22nd, 2006 by peter >

We’ve gotten a bunch more great White Limo remixes, but a combination of Spring Awakening and upgrading the interface on limoremix.com is responsible for the update lag over there. They’re coming, though. I’ll post something when some new ones go up. And, all you remixers: keep sending them in.

More Spring Awakening …

June 18th, 2006 by duncan >

Sorry to sound like a broken record but because of some amazing reviews for Spring Awakening (and the demand for tickets) the show has been extended another four weeks through August 7th at the Atlantic Theater in NYC. I haven’t been blogging much lately because I’ve been so busy with the show (and my own shows!) but I hope you understand. So thanks to all of you who came out to see Spring Awakening already and hopefully the extention means a lot more of you will have a chance to see it.

Cheers,
DS

UPDATE: Check out a few of the best S.A. reviews from the Associated Press, Variety, the New York Times, The New Yorker, and the New York Sun.

Spring Awakening

May 18th, 2006 by duncan >

So previews start tomorrow at the Atlantic Theater as you may know. The show looks amazing so I hope to see some of you guys there in the next few weeks. I’ll probably be playing guitar for the show on the 23rd, 24th, 30th and 31st of this month. (Even though they keep trying to kick me out of the band!)

Cheers,
DS
